Dairy Feeds & Supplements: what to know before you buy
Feeding for milk, not just for full bellies
A common rule of thumb is 1 kg of dairy meal for every 2 litres of milk above the first 7 litres a cow gives from fodder alone. Feeding to yield — rather than giving every cow the same scoop — saves money and improves fertility.
Mineral and vitamin supplementation matters just as much. Deficiencies in phosphorus, copper or selenium show up as poor heat signs, retained placentas and weak calves long before they show up as low milk.
Calf rearing that pays back later
Heifers that grow well in their first six months calve earlier and produce more over their lifetime. Calf starter pellets from week two encourage rumen development so calves can be weaned on time without a growth check.

Dairy feeds: frequently asked questions
How much dairy meal should I feed per cow?
Feed roughly 1 kg of dairy meal per 2 litres of milk produced above what the cow gives on fodder alone (often 5–7 litres). Split concentrates between milking times and never exceed about 4 kg in a single feed.
Do mineral licks replace mineral powders?
Licks are convenient but intake varies between cows. For high-yielding cows we recommend a measured mineral powder mixed into the dairy meal, with licks as a backup.
