Choosing the right breed and sire

Match the breed to your feed and climate, not just the milk records you have seen elsewhere. Holstein-Friesians give the most milk but need the best feeding; Ayrshires and Jerseys handle rougher conditions and give richer milk; crossing can bring hardiness to smaller farms. For goats, Saanens are the highest yielders, while Toggenburgs and Alpines are hardier and adapt well to Kenyan highlands and mid-altitude areas.

Look at a sire's proofs for milk yield, butterfat, fertility and calving ease, and avoid using a bull or buck related to your animals. Our breeding team keeps records of what each cow or doe has been served with so we can avoid inbreeding.

Conventional or sexed semen?

Sexed semen gives about nine heifer calves in ten, so it is ideal for building a herd quickly from your best cows and maiden heifers. It costs more per straw and conception rates are slightly lower, so use it on well-fed animals in good body condition that show clear heat signs.

Conventional semen is cheaper and the better choice for repeat breeders, older cows and animals in average condition.

Why semen is supplied through AI technicians

Semen straws must stay in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C until the moment of insemination. A few seconds of warming can kill sperm, so we only supply straws with our own AI service or to licensed inseminators with proper nitrogen tanks.
