Maize Seeds: what to know before you buy
Matching maize varieties to your zone
Highland areas above 1,800 m (such as parts of Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Nyandarua) suit late-maturing hybrids that use the long season fully. Mid-altitude areas benefit from medium-maturity hybrids, while drier eastern and lower Rift Valley areas need early-maturing, drought-tolerant varieties that finish before the rains stop.
Always buy certified seed in sealed packs and keep your receipt. Recycled hybrid seed loses vigour and uniformity, which can cut yield by 30% or more.
Getting the best from your maize seed
Plant at the onset of reliable rains at 75 cm between rows and 25–30 cm between plants (one seed per hole), or 75 × 50 cm with two seeds per hole thinned to one. Use a planting fertiliser and top-dress with nitrogen at knee height.

About 10 kg of certified seed plants one acre at 75 × 25 cm spacing. A 2 kg pack covers roughly a fifth of an acre.
Which maize seed is best for dry areas?
Choose early-maturing, drought-tolerant varieties (around 90–120 days). Tell our agronomists your county and altitude and we will recommend two or three suitable options in stock.
